Jimmy Watkins, representing the USA in London

Picture
Jimmy Watkins, 29-year-old firefighter from Bakersfield California will be representing the United States in 2012 London Olympics.

Watkins began riding at 21 to build fitness for firefighting and found his love for track racing. He started training full-time in 2007, and by 2008 was already a national champion.

Working an average of 56 hours a week, Jimmy spends much of his training time on rollers and on an SRM ergometer, so that he is ready to respond to alerts like the professional first responder that he is.

On top of the training demands of a world-class cyclist and the selfless commitment to his community as a firefighter, Watkins is a husband and a father to a two-year-old daughter. Watkins has four national titles, plus owns or shares three national records: flying 200m (9.876), kilometer time trial (1:01.085) plus team sprint (44.036) with Dean Tracy and Michael Blatchford.

Reflections on a team effort to win a spot in London.

Picture
Hello family, friends, fans and supporters of Project London 2012 p/b Land Rover Select CPO,

As the London Olympics draw near, we want to take this moment to publicly thank our sponsors, Land Rover Select CPO, Felt Bicycles, Atomic Coating, 3T Cycling, Victoria tires, Rolf Wheels, Gita sporting goods, DMT, Oakley, Honey Stinger and Giro for their continual support of Michael Blatchford, Kevin Mansker, Daniel Walker, Jimmy Watkins and Dean Tracy. It’s the support of our generous sponsors that made it possible for us to make a bid to try an earn enough points to qualify the United States, in the discipline of team sprint for the London Olympics.

There were a few bumps and missteps along the way, but the guys never quit. They sacrificed everything to push forward, and when it was clear the U.S. would not qualify a team in the team sprint, they quickly shifted their focus to the men’s sprint to gain enough points to earn the U.S a spot in London.
